Local Assessments

District 103 uses local assessments as a means of monitoring the curriculum and the competencies of all students in grades K-8. Students needing remediation or reinforcement of skill areas, as identified by testing and follow-up diagnosis, may receive special instruction to alleviate deficiencies.

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)

In the fall, District 103 students (grades 3-8) take the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests for reading and math. In the spring, grade 2 students take MAP for reading and math. In addition, specific students in grades 3-8 also take the MAP tests in the winter. Our students rank significantly above the national norms on these standardized achievement tests.

State Required Testing

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) requires that all school districts assess the proficiency of all pupils enrolled in grades 3-8 in reading and mathematics. See the ISBE State Assessment Schedule for 2017-2018.

Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC)
  • PARCC is the state assessment and accountability measure for Illinois students in grades 3-8, enrolled in a public school. PARCC assesses the Illinois Learning Standards aligned to the Common Core Standards in English/Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics.
  • PARCC assessments for District 103 students in 2017-2018 will take place during the ISBE window of March 5-April 20, 2018. Please find our most recent parent notifications on the webpage at www.d103.org/d103enotices.

Science Assessment for Grades 5 & 8

  • "In compliance with federal testing requirements, Illinois will administer a science assessment to students enrolled in a public school in grades 5, 8 and once at the high school level...The assessment will be administered in an online format and is aligned to the Illinois Learning Standards for Science incorporating Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which were adopted in 2014."   • The 2017-2018 ISBE window for administering the Science Assessment will be from March 1, 2018-April 30, 2018.


  • The ACCESS test (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State) for English Language Learners is a standards-based, criterion referenced English proficiency test. It measures both social and academic proficiency and is given annually to District 103 students in grades K-8, who have been identified as Limited English Proficient. The Illinois State Board of Education requires administration of this assessment annually in January and February. The ACCESS test assesses the four language domains: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
  • The ISBE window for administering ACCESS will be January 17, 2018-February 20, 2018.

Dynamic Learning Maps Alternate Assessment (DLM-AA)

  • "The Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) project is guided by the core belief that all students should have access to challenging grade-level content. The new DLM alternate assessment system will let students with significant cognitive disabilities show what they know in ways that traditional multiple-choice tests cannot. The DLM system is designed to map a student’s learning throughout the year. The system will use items and tasks that are embedded in day-to-day instruction that are aligned to the common core standards. In this way, testing happens as part of instruction, which both informs teaching and benefits students. An end of the year assessment will be created for states that want to include a summative test in addition to the instructionally embedded system."   • The ISBE window for DLM will be from March 14, 2018-May 9, 2018.

Grade K Readiness Survey for Illinois - KIDS

In the fall of 2017, Sprague Kindergarten teachers will implement the state-mandated Kindergarten Individual Development Survey (KIDS). KIDS asks Kindergarten teachers across the State of Illinois to complete a rubric that looks at 14 different readiness indicators for Kindergarten. The key areas of observation are Approaches to Learning and Self-Regulation, Social and Emotional Development, Language and Literacy, Cognition: math. Throughout a regular day at school, children will be observed, most likely not even realizing they are being observed, and then teachers will use a rubric to determine readiness levels. This information will be shared with the Illinois State Board of Education to determine kindergarten readiness trends across the state. Teachers who may observe any areas of concern will reach out to the child’s parents/guardians and discuss them during Parent-Teacher Conferences in November.

Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)

The CogAT assesses students' abilities in reasoning and problem solving using verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal (spatial) symbols. During 2017-2018, only students in grades 1, 3 and 5 will take the CogAT (as well as any new students in grades 2, 4, 6, 7 and 8).

  • Window for grade 1 (and new grade 2 ) students: December 2017
  • Window for grades 3 & 5 (and new grade 4, 6, 7, 8) students: October 2017
