Family Traditions Fair
Sprague School buzzed with excitement last week as families from 18 countries came together for the annual Family Traditions Fair, a celebration of the rich diversity within District 103. Vibrant booths showcased the cultures of countries of China, Japan, South Korea, India, Israel, Pakistan, Palestine, Assyria, Cambodia, Egypt, Guyana, Mongolia, Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Turkey, and Venezuela. From traditional clothing to authentic games and crafts, students and their families shared their heritage with pride. District 103 is a tapestry of cultures, with 51 languages spoken in the homes of families.
The Family Traditions Fair aligns with D103's Portrait of a Graduate by fostering key skills and attributes such as global citizenship, empathy, and collaboration. Through this event, students and families had the opportunity to celebrate and share their diverse cultural backgrounds within the community. By learning about and valuing each other's customs, students developed a sense of empathy and respect for diversity. The fair also promoted collaboration by encouraging families to engage with each other building connections within the community.
During the week, teachers encouraged students to explore diversity through fun, thoughtful activities, sparking discussions on how they are both similar and unique from one another. The event was beautifully organized by Multilingual Learner Teachers Jackie Bever, Anna Ahne and Amy Colon who created an atmosphere of unity and celebration for all.
