Sharing Books Changing Lives
Second-graders in Teachers Katie Jenkins and Lisa Popjoy’s classes helped sort, sticker, and pack books for children in the Chicagoland area during a recent visit to Bernie's Book Bank. Students collected over 120 books that they donated.

“Bernie’s Book Bank holds an incredible power to change the lives of children in our local community…Bernie’s Book Bank fosters a love of learning that transcends the classroom. Supporting a literacy charity like Bernie’s means investing our time and energy into a generation that will lead, innovate, and inspire with the skills and imagination nurtured through reading,” said Mrs. Popjoy, explaining why they chose this outreach project for their students as seen in these photos.

Through Sprague’s focus on inquiry, teachers have worked to develop opportunities for second-grade students to connect their learning in the classroom through literacy and social studies to answer the overarching question: How do communities work? How do communities work together to help solve problems? How do communities get what they need and want? Getting into the action of helping others in our community, helps student learning become relevant and meaningful. This connection fosters critical thinking, empathy, and collaboration, empowering students through the goals of a Portrait of a Graduate in D103. Children become active participants in their communities, strengthening their learning experiences. Next year, Sprague would like to encourage more classrooms of children and their families to volunteer their time to help Bernie’s Book Bank.
